What Is Whole-Body EMS Training?
EMS stands for electromyostimulation, or electrical muscle stimulation.
Your body already uses electricity every time you move.
When you decide to stand up, climb stairs, swing a golf club, or lift a grocery bag, your brain sends electrical signals through your nervous system to your muscles. Those signals tell specific muscle fibers to contract and create movement.
Whole-Body EMS works with this natural process.
During an EMS training session, electrodes positioned over the body’s major muscle groups deliver carefully controlled electrical impulses while you perform simple functional exercises under the guidance of a trained professional.
The electrical stimulation adds to your voluntary muscle contractions, allowing multiple muscle groups to be activated simultaneously.

What Actually Happens During a 20-Minute EMS Workout?
First, you aren’t lying on a table while a machine exercises your muscles for you.
You’re moving.
Your trainer guides you through controlled exercises such as squats, lunges, presses, rotations and other functional movements while the EMS system provides additional muscle stimulation.
The difference is that instead of training one or two muscle groups at a time, Whole-Body EMS can stimulate many of the body’s major muscle groups during the same exercise.
Your trainer can also independently adjust the intensity delivered to different areas of your body.
That means your legs may need a different level of stimulation than your abdominal muscles, back or arms.

What Does “85 Hz” Actually Mean?
You’ll sometimes hear people say that EMS causes your muscles to “contract 85 times per second.”
That’s not quite the right way to describe it.
EMS programs can deliver electrical impulses at a frequency measured in Hertz (Hz). A setting of 85 Hz means the system is delivering 85 electrical pulses per second during the stimulation interval.
Those rapid pulses work together to produce a sustained muscular contraction.
So rather than thinking about your muscle contracting and relaxing 85 separate times every second, think of EMS as delivering a rapid series of signals that helps maintain a strong muscle contraction while you’re performing an exercise.
It’s one of the reasons a relatively simple bodyweight movement can feel surprisingly challenging during EMS.
Why Can 20 Minutes Be Enough?
Traditional strength training often involves working different muscle groups sequentially.
You might perform several sets for your legs, followed by your back, chest, shoulders, arms and core.
That takes time.

How Often Should You Do EMS?

At Restore, we recommend beginning with one professionally supervised EMS training session per week and committing to a minimum of 10 weeks.
Just like traditional strength training, your body needs both stimulus and recovery to adapt.
That’s why we’ve structured our EMS program around consistency rather than intensity for intensity’s sake.
What Should You Do After an EMS Workout?
Recovery is part of your training.
We encourage clients to:
- Hydrate well before and after their session
- Eat normally before training rather than arriving depleted
- Consume a protein-rich meal or snack afterward
- Allow adequate recovery between EMS sessions
- Pay attention to how their body responds as the program progresses
Your EMS workout stimulates the processes involved in muscle repair and adaptation. Providing your body with adequate protein throughout the day gives it the amino acids it needs to rebuild and become stronger.
Is Whole-Body EMS Right for Everyone?
No—and this is important.
Whole-Body EMS has contraindications and should be performed under appropriate professional supervision.
Certain cardiac devices, implanted electrical devices, pregnancy, acute illness and several medical conditions may make EMS inappropriate or require medical clearance.
